Heavy loads can cause the back of your vehicle to sag and add unnecessary stress to your suspension. This can affect your braking, handling, headlight aim, and even the wear on your tires. To improve your vehicle's ability to endure heavy loads, you need to add support to your existing coil springs.

Adjustable Air Pressure

You can inflate and deflate these tough polyurethane helper springs as needed, ensuring the perfect amount of support for every load. It comes with manual inflation valves that are typically mounted on the bumper but can be installed anywhere on your vehicle for easy access. For even more convenience and control, you can add a compressor (sold separately), which will let you monitor and inflate your air springs.

How to Choose the Correct Universal Air Spring Kit

If there isn't a specific Air Lift 1000 Air Spring kit for your vehicle, you can use a universal kit to get the support you need. However, you'll have to take a couple measurements on your rear coil springs to ensure you get the right fit. Also, this kit will not fit vehicles with coil-over shocks or coil springs with internal jounce bumpers.

measurement diagram

First, unload your vehicle to make sure it's at normal ride height. Then, measure the inside height of your coil spring, which will be from the upper spring seat to the lower spring seat. Lastly, measure the inside diameter of the spring at its widest point. Once you have these measurements, use the table below to find the correct kit by matching up your diameter and height values. Since the air spring cylinder will inflate, it's okay if the cylinder is slightly undersized compared to the size of the coil spring. The spring pitch will also indicate the total air pressure the bag should hold. This measurement is the distance between the coils. The bag can hold 50 psi if it is less than 1" and 35 psi if it is greater than 1". Additionally, some kits include spacers to make up for any height differences.

Video Transcript for Review of Air Lift Vehicle Suspension - Rear Axle Suspension Enhancement - AL54TV

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Air Lift 1000 Universal Air Spring Kit. This kit is a universal design, so it is really for those of you who are unable to find an Air Spring 1000 Kit for your vehicle. So there's a lot of different kits out there for different makes and models of vehicles. We do have a vehicle fit guide here at etrailer.com, so you can select your year, make and model, and we'll let you know which products are guaranteed to work with your vehicle. But if you've gone through that process, you can't find anything for your vehicle, this might be a good fit for you.

There are a few measurements that you'll need to take on your vehicle's springs on the rear suspension system to ensure that this will fit in there and everything. I'll go over those measurements here at the end of this video for you. But, first, I wanna just kinda go over the basics of what this air spring system is gonna do for you. So, well, with this kit, you are gonna get these two polyurethane air springs. These are going to fit inside of the rear spring coils on your suspension system.

They're going to allow you to run this air line back to your bumper, so that you can air each bag up individually, and get the pressure that you want to help support your rear suspension system. Because oftentimes if you're towing heavy loads, you got heavy camper, or something that's weighing you down in the back end, or you got lots loaded in the back of your truck or vehicle, that can cause your back end to kind of sag down, which takes a toll on your rear suspension system, but it can also cause other problems with your vehicle. It can bring your front end up, so that your tires aren't getting as good traction on the road, kinda gives you less control of steering, and brings your headlights up into oncoming traffic's eyes, that sort of thing. So, putting these in place is going to help level everything out. These are gonna provide about one thousand pounds of load-leveling capacity.

And when you hear that, it's very tempting to think that means it's going to increase your vehicle's carrying weight. That's not the case. So, there's no suspension system, enhancement system, out there that is going to increase your vehicle's carrying capacity. They are all designed to just kind of give you a little help. So, think of it less like a second set of hands that's helping you lift up more weight, think of it more like a back brace.

So it's there to just kind of help take some of that strain off your suspension systems so that it can do its job more efficiently without becoming damaged, that sort of thing, worn down over time. So, it's not going to increase your carrying weight, but it is going to give you a thousand pounds of support to kind of help your system. It's gonna reduce the strain on your OEM suspension. It's also going to help improve those issues that we talked about, your steering, it's gonna bring your headlights down, make everything ride level like it's supposed to. They're also going to help absorb a lot of shock and jolt as you're going down the road. So it's gonna make it a much smoother ride for you. And the springs can be aired up individually from side to side, so if you've got an off-centered load, you've got a really heavy water tank or something on the one side or a toolbox, you can air up that spring more than the other side, so that it kind of helps balance out, help to minimize sway and that sort of thing. So a really nice system here to give you a lot of flexibility. One add-on that's not included in this that you could potentially look into is getting a compressor tank or a monitoring system that allows you to control your air pressure from the comfort of your cab of your vehicle so that you don't have to go find an air pump at a gas station or something along those lines. With most of those, the downside is that they combine your two air bags into one compressor, so you lose that side to side adjustability, but you gain the convenience of not having to find an air pump all the time. So something to keep in mind there, or you could add that on, but the way this kit comes, you'll cut this line in half and one will be for your right side, driver's side bag, the other will be for your passenger side bag. So you can air those up individually for a lot of adjustability. Make sure those offside off-center loads and that sort of thing are gonna be taken care of. And that really is the benefit of airbags is that you can control how much pressure and support you're getting. So these air bags have to have at least five PSI pressure to them at all times to make sure that they're not gonna wear down prematurely. But depending on your spring gap, the pitch they call it, which is the distance between your coils, will determine how much you can air these up. So if your pitch is one inch or greater, then you'll have five to 35 PSI, if that is less than one inch between your spring coils, then it's gonna be five PSI up to 50 PSI. So it kind of gives you an idea of your limitations there, how much you'll be able to lift that up. But like I said, there are gonna be a few measurements that you need to take to make sure that these bags are going to fit inside your coils. So the first one is going to be your height. So you want to measure from the upper spring seat to the lower spring seat, make sure that that is going to be five and a quarter of an inch tall. And then your inside diameter of your coils, you wanna make sure that at the widest point, it's gonna be five inches for this to fit in. They do include instructions on how to get this all installed so don't feel overwhelmed with that. It's a pretty simple process, and basically you'll just squeeze down the bags until they're small enough that you can kind of get them through the coils and then they'll air back up, you'll run your line and everything. They do provide these heat shields so that you can keep the line away from exhaust and other hot components and moving things that could potentially cause issue. So everything that you're gonna need is included here. Those instructions are very, very helpful. So should be a pretty straightforward option for you. And it is universal, so they do include two heat shields rather than just one like you might get on a vehicle specific model. And they also include these spacers to help with different heights. So depending on your setup, make sure that those are going to fit in and then everything else will be included that you'll need. This does have a limited lifetime warranty, so if you we're to have any problems with it, you're more than welcome to reach out to us here at etrailer.com. We're always happy to work with our customers to make sure you're getting good quality products and having a good experience. And this whole kit is made here in the USA, so you can trust it's made to the high quality standards that we've come to know and trust for products that are made here in the U.S. So the one thing I will say, I think this kit is gonna do a really good job for you, but it's always better if you can find the kit that is going to be specific for your vehicle to make sure that everything's going to fit in right. Takes some of that guesswork out of it. So be sure to go check our vehicle fit guide, see if there is a kit for your vehicle, make and model, but if not, make sure that the measurements that I gave you are going to work for your vehicle. And then this kit will do a good job helping to level that out making sure that you're taking some of that toll off of your rear suspension system. Making that ride a lot more comfortable and safe for you. So that's gonna complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

I added this kit to my 2005 Chevy Tahoe Z71 last year (2023). This kit was exactly what I needed to compliment my already installed, upgraded Bilstein shocks to help me tow a Camaro on a car hauler trailer from Colorado to Florida. I kept the bags inflated to 30-35psi the entire trip. I experienced no bag leakage, sag, sway, or bounce while towing. After the haul to Florida, I have kept the bags/kit in place with the bags regularly kept at 5-10psi. This has stiffened up the rear end nicely (not too much) as a daily driver hauling kids, sports equipment, tools, etc. without any issues. Intial install took about 2 hours as the most difficult part was feeding each bag through/inside the rear coil springs and making sure of no pinch points on the bags. I would recommend this kit as the materials, instructions and support from etrailer with videos, pics, and reviews (if needed), are top notch! Thank you etrailer!

They work great. I’ve used them to align my boat, a utility trailer and the wheelchair carrier for my wife. Has improved the ride and gas mileage by making the combinations more aero Dynamic. I would purchase again and recommend them to others

Very nice product so far. Installed on a 2011 Toyota Sienna van that has been converted to a rear entry wheelchair van. The airbags allowed for that extra stiffness needed to compensate for the added weight of the wheelchair. Ride quality did not suffer at all, and in fact, felt better with less sway. Hopefully it will last for a long time, but so far, we are very happy with it.

Product arrived promptly. Very simple idea, but absolutely difficult as H&¿¿to install. Trying to squeeze the folded air bag between the coil Springs was an absolute nightmare. Maybe some springs on some vehicles have a larger spacing between the coil, but a 2019 Kia Sorento does not. It took almost 6hrs to install both sides. One trick that did help was to use a little silicone spray on the air bag where it was jammed into the coil spring. This helped make the bag slippery so it passed between the coil spring. Just don't get it all over the air bag or it will be too slippery to hold onto as you push it into place. The hose clamps are really a poor design, awkward to squeeze with pliers as you position them into place. So far bags appear to be holding air pressure. Time will tell has to how durable and dependable they will be.I installed them to assist with towing my camper and help reduce the squatting when towing.

by:

Air lift 1000 installed in my 2016 Toyota sequoia. Installation went smooth and was easy to install. I have the bags set to 15psi now for daily driving. Will monitor it for a a couple weeks and see if there is any leaks.

by:

Installation was a breeze - of course after putting the truck on a frame lift and taking off the tires and wheel wells. Long enough line to run it to the bumper and really easy to fill. Impressive!

by:

2017 Toyota Sienna van, very helpful for heavy loads and load balancing when pulling 13’ fiberglass and 19’ popup campers. Have used these for years on several different vehicles and have never been disappointed.

by:

After a year it's been great. One thing I do remember is definitely have some extra hose clamps on hand. Only provided enough for each hose end and 2 of them were already brittle and snapped when first opened. Other than that no issues. I keep it on 5psi without added tongue weight, 25-30 with the bike or cargo hitch racks. Without it I'd sag a good 4-6 inches and only have about 2 to 3 inches of wheel clearance on my 2023 Pathfinder Rock Creek. With it aired up it only sags maybe an inch.

by:

Great bang for the buck and I had no problems installing myself along with new rear shocks. I had my doubts, but we just completed a 2 week trip fully loaded and towing our popup camper, and they still held 22 psi after all that (started with just under 30 psi so no real leaks!). Definitely improved the ride height and overall handing in all conditions.

Reviewing the Air Lift 1000 kit 60860 for Kia/Hyundai SUV
Installed in a 2017 KIA Sorento LX. Like many other reviews claim, this was not easy to install although the factory video makes it look so, so simple. I followed the instructions for the first bag, it took me 2 and ½ hours to get it inside the spring coil. I used an exacto knife for cutting the hole, which worked very well. Not having a spoon type tire iron, I eventually settled on the handle of a large crescent wrench. After inserting the bag ½ way in, using the wrench to push on the part already in the spring brought the rest of the bag further in. Eventually I finally got the first bag inserted although it was twisted. Inflating the bag straightened it out. Starting on the second bag, I noticed it was much more pliable. It had been sitting in the Florida sun for the past 2 ½ hours. I folded it down as instructed, then folded it in ½ lengthwise and used zip ties to secure it. After sitting in the hot sun for another hour while I hydrated, it only took me 10 minutes to get the 2nd bag inserted and needed no other tools to assist. Carefully snipped the zip ties off and it popped into place. Running the air lines was simple enough. The hose clamps are very fragile, be patient, be careful or they will break.
Overall I am quite pleased with the performance of the bags. They make a big difference in how the KIA rides when towing. They hold pressure and are easy to inflate & deflate. I use a bicycle tire pump as I have no need to modify the pressure in route and didn’t see the need to spend the money on a remote control inflation system.

by:

Very easy to install , the best choice I could have made for towing 16ft 6000lb + trailer . Haven’t had to make additional adjustment since installed over a year ago

by:

Installed this kit on our 08' sienna awd the day before a road trip. Install went fairly smooth. It did take a couple of attempts to get the air bags stuffed into the coil springs. Routed both airlines individually and mounted on lower bumper black trim just above the hitch. Held air at 35psi overnight, deflated to 25psi with cargo and hit the road. All seems well and the van handles better loaded.
Have to echo other positive reviews of this product. Makes the sienna even more versatile, and it is both affordable and a moderate diy project for shadetrees like me

by:

Great price, shipping was fast. Was easy to install. Its great keeps my van nice and level when hauling and definitely a difference in suspension and smoothness.

by:

Package arrived damaged,no parts missing or damaged, can't comment on product not installed at this time.

by:

Getting the tubing completely over the plastic barbed tee fittings is difficult at best without damaging the fittings. The bags will not hold pressure for more than a day. The metal barded fittings are much easier to use & get the tube seated properly. Recommend NOT using the plastic tee fittings.
Getting the bags inside the springs is a test of patience, flexibility, hand & arm strength within a confined area. This is not a quick installation AND make sure you're in the shade because you'll be sweating enough without the help of the sun.
Once everything was installed & inflated, the ride without the trailer was noticeably better & with the trailer, the bag end sag was completely eliminated. FYI, the ride of the KIA without the air bags & trailer is already very nice.

by:

its been a year of using the lift kit on the Jeep Wrangler Rubi (4door). no issues. did replace the clips with tighter fitting clips.

not much else to say. works as advertised.

by:

Have had these for better than a year. With the excessive amount of weight I haul around daily, I've seen vast improvement in overall handling. Also much smoother ride, with alot less tire wear. Not to mention no more dragging of the hitch in and out of approaches. In short I have been overly impressed with this product performance and ease of installation! 5 STARS

by:

Installation was super quick and easy in my home garage. The hardest part was finding a way to jack the truck high enough to hang the rear axle. My test was 25 bags of mulch. The before installation picture shows the rear squat. The after picture is of the exact same load with 30psi in the air bags. Super happy with the results. The ride is much better with a load in the back. Can't wait to hook up my camper to see how much better the ride is on a long trip.

by:

These air bags are very difficult to get into the coil spring. You must disconnect the shock absorbers and disconnect the brake line bracket. Also lubricant of some sort was most helpful. Connect the air lines while coil springs are fully extended. Otherwise you'll never get them in. Once they're inside some compressed air is helpful to blow up the bag. Once installed work quite well.

by:

Installed on 15 Jetta tdi. I Removed wheel, then coil spring, (1 side at a time) folded bag like hot dog bun and installed into coil spring upside down (fitting facing down) cause it would have hit otherwise. Reinstalled, ran lines, mounted fill valve in bottom part of rear bumper and filled. It’s been a year and is still working perfectly.

by:

Product does exactly what it’s supposed to do. Install was fairly easy. Hardest part was getting the bags in the springs but it wasn’t terribly difficult. I tow a 3000 pound pop up camper with my jeep wrangler JL unlimited and it levels out my load no problem

by:

Put these on 07 tahoe. I pull a camper and put 400lbs of tools in back of tahoe. With just the tools I noticed it help put more weight on front wheels. I have not pulled camper yet but with just the minimum 5lbs of pressure it helped with the tools.
It took me about 4 hrs to install by myself on the ground. The hardest part was getting it pushed into the coil springs. I ended up using a ratchet strap to help push it in. It was fun trying to get the hose connected afterward, could not see, had to feel and take a picture to make sure it was fully seated.

by:

After 1 year of being installed I am very pleased with this product. Hasn’t leaked any air and ensures my rear suspension doesn’t sag when towing.

by:

This was the perfect upgrade for my Honda Odyssey. Rides great towing or not. Holds pressure really well. Instructions where simple and thorough. I'm not a mechanic, but do a lot of my own maintenance and tinkering. This was one of my most satisfying projects. P.S. might need some penetrating oil to get the old parts off if they've been on a while...

by:

I’ve been using Air Lift products on all my trucks for many years. I have been very satisfied and the system has never failed me. Great product.
